Here is a list of popular locations suitable for kite flying. Information about each site is given including which wind directions are best for flying in and what facilities are available. If you know of a place within the Solent region that you think should be included in this list, then please submit it for inclusion.

Near Christchurch, the most popular site in the area. Beware children and dog walkers. Charged car parking, beware of parking on single yellow lines - check the signs
New Forest
Bye Laws
The Following restrictions are in place for kite flying anywhere in the New Forest and will be enforced by the Forestry Commission
Small kites under 2mē may be flown on the forest but be considerate to other visitors and forest wildlife. Kites can frighten animals so keep well away from livestock and horse riders. Power and traction kites over 2mē, kite buggies and wheel boards are not permitted on the forest

New Forest Bye LawsSituated in the New Forest north of the A31 near Minstead. If travelling from the east, take the last exit off the M27 sign-posted New Forest, do not continue to the end of the motorway. Take a right turn at the roundabout towards Bramshaw, Brook and Fritham. Take the second left after the Green Dragon. Continue past the golf course and through the wooded area taking the first turn on the left. Continue straight on past the turn for Fritham and the turn for Linwood. The flying site is the next car park on the right. The site is flat and firm, but beware of gorse bushes and brambles
Wilverley Plain

New Forest Bye LawsAs a high plateau this site catches the wind from most directions. The grass is short cropped and the surface undulating.
Portsmouth and Gosport
Baffins Pond, Tangier Road, Portsmouth
Located in suburb with nearby shops. After flying kite enjoy walk around the pond and feed ducks. Pub and Toilets nearby
Portsdown Hill, Widley Walk Portsmouth
This field is perfect for a northern wind. Micks Burger Van or the Churchillian pub are nearby for a good feed.
Southsea Common Portsmouth
Home to Portsmouth International Kite Festival. Check to see if any events are taking place which will occupy the field such as Southsea show over Bank Holiday Toilets at East of field.
Stokes Bay, Alverstoke Gosport
Excellent views of Solent. Large Car Park. Cafe 300 metres west along prom. Best for onshore breezes.
Southampton
Cowshot
Situated at the mouth of Southampton Water, there are splendid views of the ships heading to and from Southampton Port. There is a strip of grass just across the road from the beach which is excellent for flying in on-shore breezes. Beware the occasional helicopter! Not far from the Flying Boat Inn.
Lordshill Playing Fields
Also known as Lordshill Outdoor Recreation Centre. Home to Southampton Kite Festival. Toilets are located in the sports pavilion, but are only open when sports matches or public events are taking place. The site is very large and level although wind at ground level can be erratic.
